MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA-c) is a mitochondrial-derived peptide studied for its role in cellular metabolism, mitochondrial signaling, energy regulation, glucose utilization, insulin sensitivity, and adaptive responses to metabolic stress. Unlike most peptides encoded by nuclear DNA, MOTS-c is encoded within mitochondrial DNA, making it of particular interest in research exploring communication between the mitochondria and the nucleus.

Research has also examined MOTS-c in relation to exercise physiology, skeletal muscle metabolism, metabolic homeostasis, cellular stress adaptation, and age-related biological processes.
