📝LAB NOTES

HCG

Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a naturally occurring glycoprotein hormone composed of alpha and beta subunits. It is produced primarily by placental trophoblast cells and interacts with the luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor, commonly abbreviated as LHCGR.

TARGETED RESEARCH USE

HCG is widely investigated in reproductive-endocrinology research for its ability to activate LHCGR signaling. Laboratory studies have examined downstream responses involving cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), steroid biosynthesis and ERK1/2 signaling.

In Leydig-cell research models, HCG has been used to investigate receptor-mediated steroidogenesis, cellular development and proliferative signaling. Ovarian research has also examined the relationship between HCG signaling, corpus-luteum activity and progesterone production.

Additional research explores the expression and biological activity of HCG in placental trophoblast cells, including its relationship to trophoblast differentiation and invasion.

Research Note: HCG and luteinizing hormone interact with the same receptor but are distinct glycoprotein hormones. HCG is commonly quantified in International Units, which represent measured biological activity rather than peptide mass alone.

HCG is supplied as a lyophilized powder in a sealed 3 mL vial. Reconstitution is required before laboratory analysis. A Certificate of Analysis is available upon request.
